The article explains the controls, skills, and equipment you need for this cycle.
Your first goal is to complete a nearby quest and understand the skills on your action bar. You can learn the other systems later.
This article starts at character creation. If the game does not open, use Set up the game first.
Choose a character
Your race affects your starting area and faction. If you plan to play with friends, choose a faction together before you create characters.
Your first skillset determines your starting combat skills. Read its description on the character screen. Battlerage uses close combat, Sorcery uses spells, and Archery uses ranged attacks.
A class later combines 3 skillsets. Your first choice does not permanently lock your character to that skillset. See Classes and skills for the full explanation.
Learn the controls before you travel
Do these steps near your starting area:
- Open Options and find the key bindings.
- Check the keys for movement, jump, interaction, the map, inventory, and skills.
- Move a short distance and turn the camera.
- Open your inventory and identify your equipped weapon.
- Find your health, mana, and action bar on the screen.
Use the interaction prompt that appears near an NPC or object. The prompt shows the key for that action.
Set a comfortable camera before you leave. Origins adds camera distance and field-of-view controls. A wider view can help you see nearby targets and paths.
Complete your first quest
Do this procedure to learn the quest cycle:
- Approach a nearby quest giver.
- Use the interaction prompt to open the conversation.
- Read the objective before you accept the quest.
- Open the quest log and select the quest for the tracker.
- Check the map and tracker for its location.
- Complete the named objective.
- Return to the report NPC or object shown in the quest.
- Read the reward choices, then complete the quest.
An objective can name a monster, an item, a person, or a place. Follow its text if the map marker covers a large area.
Stay near the NPC or object when you interact. A marker can show the right location while the target stands on another floor.
The tracker only shows selected quests. If a quest disappears from the tracker, check its entry in the quest log.
Learn one small combat sequence
Select a nearby quest target before you use a skill. Check the target’s name and level so you do not attack the wrong enemy.
Read each skill tooltip for its range, mana cost, and cooldown. A skill can fail because the target is too far away.
Do this procedure to learn your current skills:
- Select one basic attack skill.
- Put it in an action-bar position that you can reach.
- Use it on the quest target.
- Watch your health, mana, and the skill’s cooldown.
- Read a second skill and add it to the same sequence.
- Repeat the sequence before you add more skills.
You do not need every skill at once. A short sequence is easier to understand than a full action bar.
Spend skill points with a purpose
Open the skills window after a level increase. Check your available points and the requirements for a new skill.
Start with skills that support your main type of attack. A useful second skill can add movement, protection, or control over an enemy.
Skillsets have their own levels. A newly selected skillset can be below your character level, so some of its skills can remain unavailable.
For more help, read Classes and skills. That article explains the 10 skillsets and the shared point limit.
Check equipment and inventory
Compare quest rewards with your current equipment. Read their level requirements and statistics before you equip them.
Keep your current quest items until the quest ends. Read Bound, Quest, and other restrictions in an item tooltip before you sell or remove an item.
You can leave costly equipment upgrades for later. Learn your skills first, then choose equipment that supports them.
Choose your next task
After a few quests, try one new activity. For example, read a crafting recipe or inspect a harvest action without a large material purchase.
Check the labor cost before you confirm a production action. Check the zone status before you travel into a conflict region.
If a quest or skill fails, note its name and the place where it failed. Use Troubleshooting for launcher problems, or ask on Discord for game help.
